The History Department consists of three full time members of staff. 

  • Mr. Trickett – Subject Leader, a Specialist Leader in Education (SLE) and an Advanced Skills Teacher (AST)
  • Mr. Lavender - Teacher of History
  • Mr. Fitzpatrick - Acting Director of Sixth Form, Teacher of History
  • Mrs Imrie – Teacher of History and Learning Support Manager (SENco)

 

Mr Trickett, Mr Lavender and Mr Fitzpatrick have worked at the school since 2005 and all teach across the three key stages. Mrs Imrie has also taught the subject as well at key stage 3 since 2013.

The department is committed to delivering the History curriculum in an exciting, engaging manner that will make students confident, willing to learn and well prepared to understand and analyse historical events and controversies..

This page outlines the topics taught in each term through Key Stage 3 (years 7 to 9), along with an overview of how assessments will take place.

 

Year 7

 

Autumn Term

The development of Church, state and society in Medieval Britain 1066-1509. Including: The Norman Conquest, The Importance of Religion and The Crusades.

 

Spring Term

Society, economy and culture during the Middle Ages. Including: The Black Death, Life in a Town and a Village, Crime and Punishment and The Peasants Revolt.

 

Summer Term

The Impact of The Roman Empire on Britain.

 

At the end of the year a gradewill be awarded based on the assessment tasks that have been completed.During the year, pupils will be assessed in 8 key historical skills throughout the year, at least one every six lessons. All tasks are linked to the skills needed in the subject at key stage 4 and 5. A GCSE grade is given to each piece of work as well as detailed, written feedback.

Year 8

In year 8 pupils study events, monarchs and ordinary people in England between 1500 – 1750. A selection of the topics covered is highlighted below:

  • The Tudor Monarchs
  • The Stuarts
  • The Civil War
  • The Great Fire of London
  • Spanish Armada
  • Tudor and Stuart Life
 

Year 9

In year 9 pupils study a series of units of work which span the years 1750 - 1945. These units are listed below:

  • Jack the Ripper
  • Industrial Revolution
  • The Holocaust
  • The Sinking of The Titanic
  • WW1
  • Kidderminster 1750 - 1850 (Local Study)
  • Slavery
  • WW2

Within each year group, pupils complete regular assessments that are focused on a key skill from GCSE. In line with whole-school policy, pupils will be set one piece of homework every other week. Homework tasks may include a number of activities, including research, preparing presentations, revision and written work. When work is marked by the teacher, a clear target for improvement is given along with a positive comment.



Key Stage 4

In Year 10 you will study:

·         Medicine and Treatment Throughout Time c1250 to present

·         The British Sector during World War One.

·         Hitler and Nazi Germany

In Year 11 you will study:

·         Early Elizabethan England 1558-88

·         British America 1713-83: Empire and Revolution

 

The topics above are covered in three exams

  • In your study of Medicine and Treatment Throughout Time you will begin by studying practices and beliefs within the Greek and Roman Empires before examining the medieval period all the way through to the modern world. This will involve assessing key events and individuals such as the Black Death, Edward Jenner and Florence Nightingale.
  • You will also study WW1 with a focus on The British sector of the Western Front. In this section of the course you will learn about common injuries during the war, the impact of the new weapons that had been developed, treatments that were used and what it was like to live in the trenches.
  • You will also study life in early Elizabethan England. This will involve learning about the problems that Elizabeth faced during her reign including the Spanish Armada invasion. You will also develop an understanding of what life was like for ordinary people during this time including what they did to enjoy themselves.
  • You will also examine what Germany was like between the wars. This will include exploring the problems that the country faced after WW1 and how it was left in ruin following the Wall Street Crash in 1929. A large focus of this module will be on how Hitler comes to power and what life was like under his dictatorship.
  • You will also learn about how Britain developed its control of America as a colony which will include a study of the role of slavery. You will also look at why America successfully fought a war against Britain that ended in the Declaration of Independence.
 
 

 

 

HISTORY

 

STUDY KEY EVENTS IN BRITISH HISTORY THAT HAVE INFLUENCED THE SOCIETY THAT WE HAVE TODAY AND GAIN AN A-LEVEL THAT BOTH UNIVERSITIES AND EMPLOYERS HIGHLY VALUE.

A Level you will study key events in British and European History that have influenced the society that we have today and gain an A Level that both universities and employers highly value. It is widely regarded as a facilitating subject. 

WHAT YOU STUDY

History pupils will be following an exciting new curriculum which will present the opportunity to study a wide range of significant topics. You will explore modules in:

·         Anglo-Saxon England and the Norman Conquest 1035-1107

·         Russia 1894 – 1941

·         The Origins of the British Empire 1558-1783. 

You will also complete an independent piece of research into an historical issue of your choice, which can be on from any time period or topic that you wish to examine. The feedback we have received from pupils who have studied these modules since September 2015 has been overwhelmingly positive.

HOW YOU STUDY

You will make or be provided with detailed notes that cover all aspects of the course. Teachers also make use of films, role play and a variety of other activities that will engage you throughout the course. The department have previously visited the Normandy battlefields and are also currently planning a future excursion to the D-Day landing beaches and The Somme battlefields.

 

DEPARTMENT STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES

You will be taught by very experienced teachers who have a long record of bringing out the best in their students. They all have specialisms and have built up a considerable body of knowledge and expertise in these areas. We have an extensive department library which sixth formers are welcome to use and a developing Haggle site containing useful links, resources and forums. The subject is regularly one of the most popular subjects at A Level due to the high quality of the teaching and also the wide range of support given.

 

PROGRESSION TO UNIVERSITY

Over the years many Hagley students have gone on to read for a degree in this subject. You will get good advice on which courses will suit you – your teachers have first-hand knowledge of universities that they will readily pass on to you.

 

OUR SUCCESSES

Every year History is an extremely popular degree course choice for many students. There are at this moment former Hagley sixth formers reading for degrees in this subject at universities such as Durham, York and Birmingham. 

 

COMBINES WELL WITH

Many Hagley sixth formers combine our subject with Law and Geography. There is a strong case for also studying English Literature, but we have taught students with a diverse range of combinations, including Mathematics and Physics. 

 

GCSE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Ideally you will have studied the subject at GCSE; but this is negotiable with Mr Trickett. You will write essays and coursework assignments and therefore should feel confident about your writing skills, having achieved at least a Grade C in English.

 

 

 

Extra Curricular Activities

 
The department is committed to enabling pupils to engage in regular learning outside of the classroom. As a result trips are organised at each key stage. In year 7 the whole year group visits Kenilworth Castle where the development of the site and it’s changing use over time is explored. 
 
In year 10 students visit two museums in London, The Old Operating Theatre and the Hunterian Museum both of which provide the chance for students to expand upon their knowledge of key topics within the Medicine and Treatment module at GCSE. 
 
In sixth form, year 13 visit The People’s History Museum and The Imperial War Museum, Manchester during the autumn term. This provides students with useful resources and experiences that assist in both of their A2 modules. 
 
In April 2014, A - level History students in both year 12 and 13 will be given the opportunity to embark upon a four day study tour of the Normandy beaches in France which will also include a visit to the see the Bayeux Tapestry.
