All pupils and students at Hagley Catholic High School follow a taught course of Maths. The Department is made up by seven specialist teachers who are fully committed to the education of the pupils:

Use the laws of arithmetic with whole numbers and decimals. Know and use the order of operations. Work with expressions. Use basic angle rules to solve problems. Explore average using a data project. |

During the year, Key Stage 3 pupils will be assessed each half term with an in class test based on the work covered during the half term.
- Analyse using ratio problems to compare and contrast; using real graphs for currency exchange
- Measure using measuring equipment and scale drawings to find:
- The height of the school; the distance around the school running track; the area needed to re-carpet the classrooms.

At the end of the year, pupils will be assessed by a formal examination. Plus there is also a teacher assessment based on the grade shown throughout the year.

- Measure using measuring equipment and trigonometry/scale drawings to find the height of the school.
- Compare compound percentage and simple interest over a specified time and investigate credit card percentage increases.
Key Stage 4
GCSE Mathematics is a two year course examined at the end of year 11. There is no coursework component; however, functional skills and problem solving are embedded in the content. A large proportion of the assessment will be functional Mathematics (i.e. the use of Maths in solving day to day problems.) Therefore thinking skills are essential.
To ensure students are entered for the appropriate tier of paper (Higher or Foundation) they will be internally examined in the Summer and Winter of Year 10 and in Year 11.
Homework will be regularly given, using both ICT and written pieces. Students will be required to own and use a scientific calculator.

Key Stage 5
What You Study
The beauty of A-level Mathematics is that it allows you to study three very different main areas of Mathematics. The largest of these studies is Pure Mathematics which is the basic tool kit to solve and interpret mathematical problems. It combines the algebra and trigonometry previously studied and takes the topics far beyond GCSE. In addition you will discover new topics such as Calculus which enables us to find gradients of curved lines. The second area of study is Probability and Statistics. Here you will analyse and interpret information and data. You will model real life situations to different probability models. The third area is Mechanics. Here you will use mathematical models to demonstrate and interpret the real world of dynamics and forces.
Within year 12 and 13 you will be taught by teachers who will cover different sections of the course. The pace will be fast; therefore you will have to spend the equivalent amount of time doing questions at home, as you do in lessons, to reinforce your understanding. To study Mathematics at A-level you must have a love of the subject and enjoy doing the practise.
Department Strengths and Resources
Every member of the department is very supportive of the A-level and will always help and advise you. In addition to your lessons we run a voluntary after school work shop each week where homework can be done and help sought.
Further Mathematics
In addition to studying A-level Maths there is the opportunity to further the development of the subject by opting for AS-level Further Maths studied over two years. This incorporates further Pure Mathematics and Statistics and studying another branch of mathematics called Discrete mathematics.
Combines Well With
Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics and Computing.
Assesment
Students are assessed every half term on the work previously covered. Plus all year groups have an end of year exam consisting of both a calculator and a non-calculator paper.
